An experiment conducted in 2003 in the Department of Computing at Lancaster University led to some research on absent presence.

'The absent presence challenge was to create a system that for some environment, virtual or physical, where visitors are normally alone or have few people around, can in some way sense the presence of those who have gone before... and also the visitors' own presence in some way is taken forward' (Dix et al, 2004)
